This project is focused on exploring themes of body/identity as well as wider issues like femininity/hegemony.
In this project Mousicos applies domestic ‘beauty products’ and glamorous items to herself and performs them with intent on highlighting their insidious meaning. The exaggeration and perversion of the use of these makeup items is done in service of creating an uncomfortable environment for the audience. Mousicos is intent on creating discomfort as a way to demonstrate her own complicated feelings on presenting gender as well as ideas of self-mutilation in the pretence of delivering ‘femininity’. The work takes on the subjects of body trauma, gender/queer identity and ‘hyper-femininity’. Mousicos’ works often strive to unnerve the viewer in order to confront their socialised and preconceived ideas surrounding norms and values.
